SF: DISTORTION2STATIC,

@ 4:24 PM by jessica

Distortion 2 Static (D2S) is a 30-minute Hip Hop television show that offers an intimate perspective into a progressive Hip Hop culture by highlighting the current events within the community and profiling those who are committed to advancing its art forms. The D2S brand also extends itself into fashion, music, and nightlife entertainment. (distortion2static)

During freshmen year (circa 2004-2005) of high school, I discovered a local music channel on television called Distortion 2 Static that played around 2AM on Mondays/late night Sundays. The same year, I met my friend Krizzia. We'd always go to her house and sometimes pass by her cousins room. Her cousin was a sneaker aficionado for sure, but he was also a DJ for Distortion 2 Static. I was ecstatic since I was a viewer of the show. As an admirer of the show, I asked Krizzia if her cousin would let me get a sticker (logo, picture above), and he did. And I still have that sticker with the backing still intact 'til this day.

Through D2S, I discovered artists such as Hieroglyphics and Rappin' 4 Tay. I fell in love with Rappin' 4 Tay's song, "I'll Be Around" when I first discovered him on D2S. And honestly, I had to memorize the lyrics and try to look for the song online. Back when iPhone wasn't invented and the Shazam app wasn't available of course.

When I first started this blog, I think I posted the "I'll Be Around" music video but I could be wrong. Four years ago, I joined YouTube and this was the first video I favorited. Here is it again, enjoy:

It simply has the essence of San Francisco. By the looks of it, I'm sure this is when the San Francisco 49ers were at their peak when they won their last super bowl in 1995. I was 5 years old then, so I can't say much about that. I am a fan of how old music videos used to look, especially since they were from low budgets. My favorite old school video has to be SWV-You'reTheOne.mp3; and if you didn't know by now.. that's one of my favorite songs. I just love how it sounds, even if the message is about cheating. I don't believe in cheating; it's wrong, period.

As of today, I don't watch a lot of music videos. I think I stopped watching music channels probably when I was a junior in high school? But I could be wrong. So, if you mention a video.. I probably don't know what you're talking about.

I have a slight fond memory of playing "The Biggest Lie" by Felt, a million times. No lie. The lyrics weren't available online, so I had to replay versus over and over to type up the lyrics myself. Call me crazy, but that's the truth.

This has nothing to do with D2S but in junior year of high school, I was the co-president of the Filipino club with my friend JR (Ronald). He was a senior while I was a junior. He had a big passion for music, especially Hip Hop. During Filipino club practices, before club members would come.. we'd just put a song on and we'd only know the lyrics. We shared songs with each other through e-mail, but after senior year.. I lost contact with him until my Debut (18th birthday) as he was one of my roses. But still, I stopped using the e-mail I had then because 'cause I forgot my password. But I miss him. He was a chill dude that loved music. And it was nice of him to share music with me. As for me, I hate when my sister knows the lyrics to songs I first discovered before her, long story..
